Nintendo Wii sales plummet in Japan pending Wii 2 reveal

Nintendo Co.’s Wii plummeted this week in Japan pending the reveal of the Wii successor next month.

Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the Wii sold 6,336 units between May 9 and May 15 to rank No. 4 in overall sales.

By comparison, the Wii sold 11,520 units the week prior.

The hardware did not rank any titles in the top 10.

Nintendo in Apr. said it will demonstrate a playable model and announce more specifications of the Wii successor at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in June.

Reports claim the Wii successor, dubbed Project Café, will have a three-core CPU, 6.2-inch touch-screen controller, and high-definition functionality.

The controller is said to be able to stream content from the console.

The Wii has sold 86 million units worldwide to date since launch in 2006.

Nintendo in Apr. recorded a 66 percent decline in profits amid confirmation of a successor to the Wii console to be sold in 2012.

The company held a net profit of $945M in fiscal Mar. compared to $2.78 billion the year prior.

Net sales fell 29 percent to $12.3 billion.

The company sold 15.1 million Wii units in the fiscal year, down from 20.1 million units the year prior.

Current Wii hardware SKUs include the White and Black that includes a Wii Remote Plus, Wii Sports Resort and Wii Sports sells at $199.99.

Nintendo in Apr. announced new first-party Wii titles to be sold in 2011, including the Wii Play: Motion with Black Wii Remote Plus SKU and Mystery Case Files: Dust to Dust.
